Rules for Climbing at Bon Echo

The following rules were established by a Memorandum of Understanding between the Alpine Club and the Bon Echo park authorities. Please respect this agreement - the future of climbing at Bon Echo depends on your co-operation.

  • No new route activity.
  • No new fixed protection. Permission from the ACC and the Park must be sought before replacing fixed protection.
  • Avoid using a tree in any way, shape or form (even slinging them) for belays and rappels. The ACC will move quickly to install bolt belay stations on climbs where trees are commonly used.
  • Rappelling may only be done in the case of an emergency except for the following sites, where we have been given formal permission to maintain a rappel station: Thunder Crack, The Slab, The Easy Way Down, Formication, The Saucer Lucy Face, Spiderman (62m free drop) and The Joke (81m free drop)
  • Do not leave any visible gear behind anywhere. If you must, retrieve it as soon as possible or inform the ACC so that we may recover it.
  • Stick to the established trails on descent (especially where the Easy Way Down trail has been re-routed). A rappel station has been placed at the top of the Easy Way Down to cut down on the gully erosion. Please use it and take care of the gully trees.
  • Climbing waivers will be required. They will be available at the hut for ACC members. Other climbers must register at the Park. A route activity log will be placed in the hut. Please make a record of every ascent performed in this log.
  • Routes at the north end of the cliff were previously closed because of a peregrine falcon reintroduction program. These routes have been re-opened.
  • The following routes are closed because of pictographs at near their base (however, these closure are subject to review if the routes can be re-worked to avoid the pictographs): Meditteranean Sundance, The Last shall be First (original start), Nilevan, Brass Monkey, Monkeyshines, Spiderman, Flat Paint, Black Groove.
  • All accidents requiring a rescue effort or resulting in an injury must be reported to the Park as soon as is reasonable possible after the incident. It should be acknowledged that Bon Echo Park has no special resources or skills to perform a rescue but will contact local authorities (OPP, CFB Trenton) as required.
